Mule Team Poster

Though this site is more about mule, donkey and draft horse t-shirts and gift items, we get a lot of searches for how to harness a mule. Here is one generally accepted series of steps for harnessing with western or box style harness.

Step 1.  Unbuckle and slip collar up around mule’s neck and buckle into place. Generally a mule’s head is too large to comfortably slide over the head.

Step 2.  a) From harness hook or rack, place hip strap assembly (not the britchen) on your right shoulder.  b) Slip your right arm under the saddle or back pad.  c) Grasp the right hame with the right hand and the left hame with the left hand.

Step 3.  Approach mule from left side, watching ears for acceptance. Do not lift up on hames as you are approaching.

Step 4.  Place right hame over the mule’s withers at the collar.

Step 5.  Push the right trace and hip strap assembly across the mule’s back so the harness is centered on back.

Step 6.  Place the britchen on the rump; do not pull down into place. Pulling the britchen down into place now would tighten the back straps, making it difficult to fasten the lower hame strap.

Step 7.  a) Place the hames in the collar’s groove and even their height.  b) Fasten the lower hame strap.

Step 8.  Snap the breast strap snap to the right lower hame ring.

Step 9.  Pull the britchen down and get the tail out from under it by swinging the tail to the side.

Step 10.  Bring the pole strap back between the front legs and snap the near side (left side) quarter strap to it.

Step 11.  Place belly band through the loop in the end of the pole strap (if there is no loop, simply bring the belly band under the pole strap), and buckle into place. This does not need to be made tight.

Step 12.  Go around to the right side (off side) and snap the right quarter strap to the ring in the end of the pole strap. Quarter strap snaps must fasten in with the smooth side of the snap up. Spring clip side of snap must face toward ground to prevent chafing horse.

Check for proper adjustment by pulling forward on the coupler snap and looking for the line defined by the hame to continue through the breast strap and coupler snap. For a better explanation and more information on the hows and whys of harnessing and how to do it safely, check out the book “Farming with Horses” by Steve Bowers and Marlen Steward. It is a great beginner reference.
